This lesson focuses on the phrases for making offers and requests. With the topic of food, the context for this lesson is ‘Eating Out’.  There is a basic language structure for offers and requests as well as for acceptance or rejection of the offers and requests.  For both, we need to think of formality –how close we are to or what relationship we have with the other person.
Formal Language is used when our relationship with that person is new or distant.  More informal language can be used with people we know well  and are familiar with.  For both cases, our language should be polite.
Other factors also apply, such as body language and intonation.  For example, with our close friends, we can say : “Get me a drink, will ya?”  This is very informal and it may sound bossy.  However, with the right body language and tone, this type of request is very commonly used amongst good friends.

OFFERING
Formal: "Would you like (me) to order?", "Shall i orde for us?", "May i get you another glass of water?"
Informal: "How about sharing an appetizer?", "Can i get you some coffe?", "Do you want to share an appetizer?"
"MAY and CAN are also used used to ask for permission"

ACCEPTING
Formal: "Yes, please", "Yes, that would be very nice", "Yes, thats kind of you".
Informal: "Please", "You bet", "That sounds great".

REJECTING: "No, thank you", "Thats very kind of you, but no, thank you", "I'm fine, thanks", "No, thank you, i'm fine"

REQUESTING
Formal: "May i inform you of today's specials?", "Would you mind if i stay longer?"
Informal: " "Can i tell you about our specials?", "Would you pass me the salt?"ACCEPTING: "Of course", "Yes, thats no problem at all", "It would be my pleasure", "Sure!/Certainly", "No problem", "I'd be glad to".

REJECTING: "I'm sorry, thats not possible", I'm sorry, i can't", "I'm afraid thats not possible", "I'm afraid not", "Sorry, no"

NOTES:
-When making requests, either in formal or informal situations, politeness is important.  ‘Please’ makes any request more polite.
-‘Would’ and ‘Could’ are used in both formal and informal situations.  ‘Will’ and ‘Can’ are only used in informal situations.(Smart up your Live)
