✦ List of commonly used abbreviations for Arabic Salutations ✦
Many of us have probably come across the following abbreviations while reading Hadith, Ayah, or any kind of Islamic information on the Internet or books:► [SWT], [S.A.W.], [A.S.], [R.A.], etc. Some of us might already know what they stand for and use these as reminders to say the complete salutation. However, there may be some who are unaware of what these abbreviations stand for and the importance of sending proper blessings after the mentioned Names. Therefore, this note has been created to inform the readers of what each abbreviation stands for and the importance of giving proper salawat.
Once again, the letters used are only to be seen as a REMINDER to recite their corresponding complete salawat and not as mere alphabets.
[Note: Rasulullah = The Messenger of Allah = Prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu Alayhi Wasallam)]
SWT = "Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala" = 'Glorious and Exalted is He [Allah]'. This expression is said after mentioning the name of Allah [Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala]. It is an act of reverence and devotion towards Allah [Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala].
S.A.W. or SAW or S or S.A.W.S. = "SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam" = 'Allah bless Him and grant Him peace'. This expression follows specifically after saying the name of the last Prophet of Islam, Muhammad [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam].
PBUH = "Peace be upon Him" is also used at times after mentioning the Name of Prophet Muhammad [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam].
*******Important Reminder: Please write/type/say the entire Salutation instead of the abbreviations after mentioning Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam] because of the Hadith: "Whoever sends one salah upon me, Allah will send ten upon him." (Sahih Muslim Book 4 No.747)
A.S. = "Alayhis Salaam" = 'Peace be upon Him'. This expression follows after all the ArchAngels (i.e. Jibreel, Mikaeel, etc.) and all the Prophets except Prophet Muhammad [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam].
R.A. = RadhiAllahu 'Anhu = 'May Allah be pleased with Him'. This expression follows after the name of a Sahabi = MALE companion of Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam].
R.A. = RadhiAllahu 'Anha = 'May Allah be pleased with Her". This expression follows after the name of a Sahabiyyat = FEMALE companion of Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam].
R.A. = RadhiAllahu 'Anhum = 'May Allah be pleased with Them'. This expression follows after mentioning the Sahabah = plural for Sahabi/Sahabiyyat = Friends/Companions of Rasulullah [SallAllahu Alayhi WaSallam].
**Please do begin or continue to say these salutations in their complete forms when you see the letters which only serve the purpose of a REMINDER.
