Sports and Hobbies (Go, Do, or Play)
By 3 hours 55 minutes ago
When we talk about sports and hobbies, there are three verbs that we use very often. These are ‘go’, ‘do’, and ‘play’. The problem that most students have is remembering which verb goes with which type of activities. There are some basic rules, but like with a lot of rules in English, there are exceptions. (The exceptions will be in the notes below.)
The verbs GO, DO, and PLAY act as regular verbs, so the grammar rules for tenses apply (can be past, present, or future).
• Play (ball sports, rules, competitions, and tournaments)
This is used mostly with sports or games with ‘balls’. We also use ‘play’ with competitive games where we play against another/other player(s). *This is the most common word to use with sports or hobbies.*
Examples:
My sister plays tennis: tennis is a ball sport
I play poker every week: competitive game –we play to win
My brother and his friends are going to play basketball tonight: ball sport in future
I played chess yesterday: competitive game in the past
• Go (activities with V-ing)
We used the gerund form of a verb to make it into an activity. To cook => cooking.
Examples:
We often go camping in the summer.
My brother goes fishing all the time.
I went swimming last weekend.
My family is going to go hiking in the mountains next month.
• Do (recreational activities that are not so competitive)
This is used with pretty much other types of activities. The activities are usually recreational and non competitive and the sports are usually non team sports.Examples:

I heard that you do karate. (non-team activity)
I do crossword puzzles in my spare time. (non competitive activity)
She did yoga this morning. (non competitive activity in the past)
NOTES: Some exceptions
• Golf and Bowling (sports with a ball) – but we don’t say play.
We just say “I golf” / “I go golfing” and “I bowl” / “I go bowling”.
• We say “play on the computer”, but we say “go online/on the internet”.
